Gone But Never Forgotten

Today marks 12 years that changed every single persons life in College Station forever. On November 18, 1999 at 2:42am the Aggie Bonfire collapsed, killing 12 students and injuring 27. The bonfire stood 40 feet high and consisted of 5,000 logs.

The bonfire was a 90 year tradition that Aggies built and burned on campus each year before the A&M vs University of Texas game to symbolize two things; "The burning desire to beat the hell outta t.u. and the undying flame of love that every loyal Aggie carries in his/her heart for the school".

Five years later, the Bonfire Memorial was built and dedicated to the 12 students that were killed. The Memorial was built on the exact location as the 1999 Bonfire.

I was never able to experience the burning of the Bonfire while I attended A&M but I was able to go to the Bonfire Memorial that was held each year on November 18. I remember attending the Memorial one night with my roommate and it was just so surreal. It was so touching and heartfelt to be there remembering the ones that we lost.

Here is a video of the 10 year anniversary Bonfire Remembrance.

Gone but never forgotten. We will always remember the 12 that we lost. I will leave you with this music video by Granger Smith. It is one of my favorite songs and shows a glimpse of our Aggie Traditions.
